Os países do G8 concordaram esta quarta-feira numa redução em 80 por cento das suas emissões de carbono até 2050 e defendem para os países emergentes uma redução de 50 por cento no mesmo período.

A oposição da China e da Índia impedirá, no entanto, salvo acordo de última hora, que a decisão seja ratificada hoje pelo fórum das principais economias do mundo, que reúne o G8 e as economias emergentes também em L’Aquila, Itália. As metas aprovadas pelo G8 permitiriam conter o aquecimento global em níveis inferiores a dois graus centígrados face aos valores anteriores à industrialização.

É a primeira vez que este grupo de países, que representam 13 por cento da população do planeta e 40 por cento das emissões mundiais, considerados os maiores “poluidores históricos”, segue as recomendações dos cientistas.O G8 junta-se assim a uma centena de países, entre os quais os da União Europeia, que já tinham aprovado o limite de aquecimento de dois graus.

A mudança de posição deve-se, em boa medida, à alteração no modo como os Estados Unidos passaram a encarar o problema desde a entrada em cena do novo Presidente dos Estados Unidos, Barack Obama.
